割合あれこれ

企業広報の分野では、企業の活動を明示するため、具体的な数字を挙げて説明することが多い。例えば、統合報告書などでは、At a Glanceの見出しのもと、さまざまな数字を分かりやすく列挙して、その業績を可視化する。そのなかでも特に目につくのが、「売上高前年度比10%アップ」のような、割合や比率を使った表現である。この場合に使用されることの多い、ratio、rate、percent、percentage という表現について、それぞれの違いを明らかにしてみたい。

まずは ratio について。英英辞典では the relationship between two groups or amounts, which expresses how much bigger one is than the other と説明される。基本的に二者間の比率・割合が問題になるので、AのBに対する比率、AとBの比率を意味する場合にこの語は用いられる。

次いで rate について。複数の意味があるが、そのうち「割合・比率」を意味する場合は、rate of divorce, exchange rateなど、複合語として用いられることが多い。また a quantity, amount, or degree of something measured per unit of something elseと定義されるよう、レベル、クラスのような意味で用いられる場合もある。

Her typing rate was 80 words per minute.

The population is increasing at a rate of 7 percent per year.

お次は percentについて。Per cent（100につき）の原義からも分かるように、全体を100とした時の割合を指す。記号%をスペルアウトした表記と考えると分かりやすい。

Twenty percent of the executives are women.

Our sales increased ten percent compared with the same period last year.

最後に percentage。こちらもpercent同様、per centの原義をもつが、百分率を指す場合は、percentよりもpercentageが使用される。

A high percentage of the cost is occupied by personnel expenses.

The percentage of residents who are 35 years old or older is 75 percent.

以上がそれぞれの単語の特徴であるが、具体的な文脈の上では、それぞれの違いが曖昧な場合も多々見うけられる。

例えば「委員会に占める女性の比率」は、もう一方の項である「男性の比率」を前提とすれば、二者間での比較をあらわす ratio を使用して the ratio of women on the committee のように表記されうるが、百分率の観点から問題とされる場合は the percentage of women in the committee のようにも表記される。

実際の表記パターンはさまざまであり、どの訳語をあてがうべきか迷う時も多いが、そんな時は、上記のような原点に立ち返って考えてみたい。
